Strange Fruit, Abel Meeropol tarafından yazılmış olan bir şiirin Billie Holiday tarafından seslendirilmesi sonrasında, ABD’deki ırkçılığa karşı hareketin sembolü haline gelmiştir. Bir tür bildiri olarak görülen Strange Fruit, en etkili protest şarkılar arasında gösterilmiş, pek çok filmde kullanılmış, Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley gibi birçok ünlü isim tarafından seslendirmiştir. Strange Fruit, ABD’nin özellikle Güney eyaletlerinde yoğun olarak hissedilen ırkçılık karşısında halen güçlü bir sembol olmaktadır. 2017’de Rebecca Ferguson Donald Trump’ın Başkanlık seremonisinde şarkı söyleme teklifine, Strange Fruit’u söyleyebilecekse kabul edeceği yanıtını vererek, şarkının etkisinin halen sürdüğünü göstermiştir.

This month’s artwork of the #SecurityPortal is American artist Billie Holiday (Eleanora Fagan, 1915) and her song #StrangeFruit.
Strange Fruit has become a symbol of the movement against racism in the United States, after a poem written by Abel Meeropol that was performed by Billie Holiday. Strange Fruit, which is seen as a political statement, has been among the most influential protest songs. It has been used in many movies, sung by many famous names such as Nina Simone and Jeff Buckley, was chosen as the song of the century by Time magazine in 1999, even many books were written about it and documentaries were shot. At the same time, the song, which won many awards, was named by Ahmet Ertegun, one of the founders of Atlantic Records, as a “Declaration of War” and “the first unsilencing cry against racism”.
Billie Holiday has reacted to social problems throughout her life and has composed songs about equality, racism, and justice. Strange Fruit reminds Holiday of the racism that her father suffered; he lost his life as a result of not being treated well at the hospital he went to, just because he was black. Meeropol, on the other hand, wrote his poem in 1937 in memory of two blacks who lost their lives as a result of lynching, which was very common at that time, and Holiday recorded the song in 1939.
In 1978, Holiday’s interpretation was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Holiday’s plain style draws attention to the striking lyrics of the song. The clarity and strikingness of the lyrics were effective in the widespread adoption of the song. After the song was so popular, Meeropol was questioned and asked, “Did the Communist Party ask you to write the song?”.
Strange Fruit is still a powerful symbol in the face of racism, which is intensely felt in the Southern states of the USA. In 2017, Rebecca Ferguson responded to Donald Trump’s offer to sing at the inauguration that she would accept if she could sing Strange Fruit, demonstrating that the song’s impact still remains.
