Thure de Thulstrup (1848-1930), İsveç’te dünyaya gelir. Babası İsveç Donanma Bakanı olan Thulstrup, yirmili yaşlarında topçu subayı olarak İsveç ordusuna katılır; fakat bir süre sonra İsveç’ten ayrılıp Fransa’ya giderek yabancı lejyonuna katılır. Fransa-Prusya Savaşı’nda ve Kuzey Afrika’da görev yapar (Marden 2003, 690). Fransız ordusundan da ayrıldıktan sonra, önce Kanada’ya daha sonra da 1873 senesinde Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ne taşınır. Thulstrup, Paris’te ve New York’ta sanat eğitimleri almıştır. Amerikan İç Savaşı ve sonrası döneme tanıklık ederek savaşla ilgili eserler üretmiştir. Genelde muharebeleri resmeden Thulstrup, 1887 yılında Battle of Gettysburg eserine imza atmıştır.
Gettyburg Muharebesi, 1863 tarihinde savaşın en kanlı cephelerinden biri olmuştur. Savaş çoğunlukla güney eyaletlerde sürerken, Robert Edward Lee komutasındaki güney konfederasyonu güçleri kuzeyde kalan Pensilvanya kırsallarındaki Gettysburg ilçesine taarruz eder. Konfederasyon, Gettysburg’da ağır bir yenilgi alır ve muharebe Birlik Kuvvetlerinin zaferiyle sonuçlanır. Kuzeyin üstünlük kazanmasıyla Amerikan İç Savaşı’nın dönüm noktalarından biri haline gelen muharebe sonucunda Konfederasyon güçleri güneye geri çekilir.
Thulstrup, bu tablosu ve diğer savaş tablolarıyla 19.Yüzyıl’ın önemli ressamlarından biri olmuştur. Bir Amerikan siyasi dergisi olan Harper’s Weekly’de çalışmıştır (Dictionary of Literary Biography 2005, 1). Sanat ve askeri yeteneğini birleştirerek dönemin sayısız muharebesini resmetmiştir (Weitenkampf, 2008, 194). Stratejik önemiyle tarihin unutulmaz meydan savaşlarından biri olan Gettysburg Muharebesi, Thure de Thulstrup’un illüstrasyonu ile hafızalara kazınmıştır.

Thure de Thulstrup (1848-1930) was born in Sweden. Thulstrup, whose father is the Swedish Minister of the Navy, joins the Swedish army as an artillery officer in his twenties, but after a while, he leaves Sweden and goes to France to join the foreign legion. He served in the Franco-Prussian War and in North Africa (Marden 2003, 690) After leaving the French army, he moved first to Canada and then to the United States in 1873. Thulstrup studied art in Paris and New York. He produced works related to the war by witnessing the American Civil War and the post-war period. Thulstrup, who generally depicts battles, signed the Battle of Gettysburg in 1887.
The Battle of Gettyburg was one of the bloodiest fronts of the American Civil War in 1863. As the war continues mostly in the southern states, Southern Confederate forces under Robert Edward Lee attack Gettysburg County in rural Pennsylvania to the north. The Confederacy suffers a heavy defeat at Gettysburg and the battle results with the Union Forces victory. As a result of the battle, which became one of the turning points of the American Civil War, with the victory of the north, the Confederate forces retreated to the south.
Thulstrup became one of the important painters of the 19th century with this painting and his other war paintings. He worked for Harper’s Weekly, an American political magazine (Dictionary of Literary Biography 2005, 1). Combining his artistic and military skills, he illustrated numerous battles of the period (Weitenkampf, 2008, 194). The Battle of Gettysburg, one of the unforgettable field battles of history with its strategic importance, is engraved in memories with the illustration of Thure de Thulstrup.
