Bu ay #GA_GüvenlikPortalı’nın sanat eseri 1969 tarihli #Savaş (War) şarkısı.

İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası oluşan çift kutuplu dünya düzeninde, yaşanan uzun ve tarihsel olarak önemli çatışmalardan biri Vietnam Savaşı olmuştur. ABD ve SSCB’nin Vietnam’daki farklı tarafları desteklediği, 1955’ten 1975’e kadar süren bu uzun savaş, ABD açısından askeri başarısızlığın yanında insani kayıplar ve prestij kaybıyla sonuçlanmıştır. 1960’larda, özellikle 1964-75 arası, Vietnam Savaşı’na karşı Amerikan kamuoyunda yoğun protesto hareketleri başlamış ve bu savaş karşıtı hareket sanatçılar tarafından da desteklenmiştir. Woodstock gibi festivaller büyük ses getirmiş, çiçek çocuklar olarak anılan hippilerin var olduğu ve her türlü alternatif düşünce akımının daha fazla konuşulduğu bir ‘karşı-hareketler’in yükselişi dönemi yaşanmıştır. Bu süreç içerisinde ve sonrasında savaş karşıtı şarkılar ve filmler de yoğun olarak üretilmiştir. Bu dönem üretilen savaş karşıtı şarkılardan biri de yayınladığında yarattığı etkiyle en popüler protesto şarkılarından biri olarak tarihe geçen ‘War’ olmuştur.

‘War’ Norman Whiftited ve Barrett Strong tarafından 1969’da yazılmış ve The Temptations grubu için düşünülmüştür. Fakat şarkı esas patlamasını 1970 yılında Edwin Starr’ın seslendirmesiyle yaşamıştır. Starr’ın en beğenilen şarkısı olmuş ve Starr’a 1971’de en iyi R&B Erkek Vokal dalında Grammy adaylığını kazanmıştır. 1999’da ise şarkının kaydı Grammy Onur Listesi’ne girmiştir. Bruce Springsteen de War şarkısını konserlerinde seslendirmiş ve konser albümünde de yer vermiştir. Günümüzde halen en sevilen savaş karşıtı şarkılar arasında yer almaktadır.

Şarkının nakarat bölümünde geçen “Savaş, ha, evet, Ne işe yarıyor, Kesinlikle hiçbir şey” sözleri Amerikan kamuoyunca yaygın olarak benimsenmiş ve muhalefetin bir numaralı sloganı haline gelmiştir. Şarkı savaşı tüm insanlığın düşmanı, masum hayatların mahvoluşu, binlerce annenin göz yaşı olarak niteler ve savaşın ölüme, sakatlığa yol açtığını oysa hayatın kısa ve değerli olduğunu vurgular. Edward Starr’ın seslendirdiği versiyonuyla, şarkının vermek istediği duygu vokallerde birebir yansır ve böylece ‘War’ unutulmaz şarkılar arasında yerini alır.

During the bipolar world order that emerged after the Second World War, one of the longest and historically important conflicts was the Vietnam War. This long war, which lasted from 1955 to 1975, in which the USA and the USSR supported different parties in Vietnam, caused human losses and loss of prestige as well as military failure for the US. In the 1960s, especially between 1964-75, intense protest movements broke out in the American public against the Vietnam War, and this anti-war movement was also supported by artists. Festivals such as Woodstock made a big splash, and there was a period of the rise of ‘counter-movements’ in which hippies known as flower children existed and all kinds of alternative thought movements were more talked about. During and after this period, anti-war songs and films were produced intensively. One of the anti-war songs produced during this period was ‘War’, which went down in history as one of the most popular protest songs with the effect it created when it was released.

‘War’ was written by Norman Whiftited and Barrett Strong in 1969 and was intended for the band The Temptations. However, the song had its real explosion in 1970 with the voice of Edwin Starr. It became Starr’s most acclaimed song and earned Starr a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Male Vocal in 1971. In 1999, the recording of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Bruce Springsteen also sang the song War at his concerts and included it in his concert album. It is still one of the most popular anti-war songs today.

The words “War, huh, yes, What is it good for, Absolutely nothing” in the chorus of the song were widely adopted by the American public and became the number one slogan of the opposition. The song describes the war as the enemy of all humanity, the destruction of innocent lives, and the tears of thousands of mothers, and emphasizes that war causes death and disability, whereas life is short and precious. With the version sung by Edward Starr, the emotion the song wants to give is reflected in the vocals, and thus ‘War’ takes its place among the unforgettable songs.
