1873 Viyana doğumlu ressam Hans Larwin, Avusturya’da resim eğitimini tamamladıktan sonra Avrupa’nın çeşitli kentlerini gezerek gözlemlerde bulunmuş. Kısa bir süre ABD’de yaşadıktan sonra tekrar Avrupa’ya dönüş yapmış ve daha sonra ülkesinde sanat profesörü olarak çalışmalarını sürdürmüştür.
Viyanalıların günlük hayatına odaklanan tablolarıyla bilinen Larwin, Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Avusturya-Macaristan’ın savaş ressamı olarak cephelerde görev almıştır. Larwin’in en önemli eserlerinden Asker ve Ölüm tablosu Viyana Savaş Tarihi Müzesi’nde yer almaktadır.
Larwin’in Asker ve Ölüm tablosunda, cephedeki bir asker ve yanı başındaki ölüm imgesi görülür. Larwin, askerliğin ve savaşın gerçeğini kullandığı imge, renk, ve kompozisyonla çarpıcı şekilde yansıtmıştır. Askerin omzuna koyduğu eliyle yanı başındaki ölümün verdiği umutsuzluk hissi, tabloda kullanılan renkler ile pekiştirilmiştir. Ölüm, hem nişan alan askere yakındır, hem de çekmekte olduğu tetiğin hedeflediği yerdekine.

Painter Hans Larwin, born in Vienna in 1873, completed his painting education in Austria and then traveled to various cities in Europe to make observations. After living in the USA for a short time, he returned to Europe and later continued his career as an art professor in his home country.
Known for his paintings focusing on the daily life of the Viennese, Larwin served on the front lines as the war painter of Austria-Hungary during the First World War. One of Larwin’s most important works, Soldier and Death, is housed in the Vienna War History Museum.
In Larwin’s Soldier and Death, a soldier at the front and the image of death beside him are depicted. Larwin strikingly reflected the realities of military service and war through the images, colors, and composition he used. The feeling of despair conveyed by the death figure, with the soldier’s hand on his shoulder, is intensified by the colors used in the painting. Death is near both the soldier taking aim and the target of the trigger he is pulling. The solitary rifle at the bottom left of the painting and the absence of anyone at the gun underscore the pervasive theme of death.
Larwin’s Soldier and Death starkly reveals the harsh realities of war. Approaching human fragility and powerlessness in the face of death with an artistic lens, the painting reinforces the message it intends to convey with all its details, from the pale choice of earth-tone colors to the way the light illuminates the skeleton.
