Ayın Sanat Eseri – Ağustos 2022 / Artwork of the Month – August 2022

The artwork of this month of #SecurityPortal is Hüseyin Avni Lifij’s 1923 dated paintings Karagün (Darkday) and Akgün (Brightday).

Hüseyin Avni Lifij, one of the second generation (1914 Generation) Turkish painters, is the son of a Circassian family who had to emigrate after the 1877-78 Ottoman-Russian War, born in Samsun in 1886. Hüseyin Avni, spent his childhood in Istanbul, followed anatomy at Medical School and physics chemistry courses at Pharmacist School in order to acquire knowledge of anatomy and color/paint that would improve himself in the field of painting during the two years he took a break from school due to health problems. With the influence of these, he had strong color and pattern skills. Although he produced works in a period when impressionism and expressionism were strong, his solid knowledge of patterns showed its effect in paintings.

Osman Hamdi Bey, who saw Lifij’s “Self-Portrait with a Pipe” painted when he was only 20 years old, added Lifij to the list of students to be sent to France two years later. Under the auspices of Abdülmecit Efendi, he continued his painting studies in Paris until his scholarship was terminated in 1912. Later, he worked as a painting and French teacher in high schools, and later as an art teacher at the Academy. It is seen that symbolism is effective in Lifij’s style and despite the impressionist influence of his period, there is an intense romantic atmosphere in his paintings.

Hüseyin Avni Lifij participated in the exhibitions of war paintings in Galatasaray in 1917 and in Vienna in 1918 with many of his paintings. In 1922, he paid a visit to Ankara with Mustafa Kemal and was hosted there for four months. Meanwhile, he painted the portrait of Marshal Fevzi Çakmak. On his return to Ankara, he produced important works about the War of Independence, such as his paintings Karagün and Akgün.

The two paintings, Karagün and Akgün, are two paintings that reflect the period of the War of Independence and its aftermath, complement each other and tell us a story. In the painting Karagün, Hüseyin Avni depicts the occupied homeland with an allegorical interpretation. At the background, there is a village destroyed by enemy occupation, ruined houses, a destroyed mosque minaret, and a burned tree trunk, a half-naked woman who seems to have been raped lies on the village rug, and at her head is a baby hanging from her cradle and a bird of prey waiting on her head. With this painting, the destroyed country, the trampled culture, and the darkened future are symbolized.

The other painting, Akgün, represents the end of the occupation on September 9. As the only figure in the painting, the victorious state of the Turkish soldier with his head raised towards the sky is seen. The sun shimmers behind the mountains, the fog is slowly lifting, and the trees and grass are starting to shine with a vibrant green hue. All the difficulties, symbolized by the steep mountains in the background, have been overcome, and the country has finally risen. From the expression on the soldier’s face, the pride of this difficult victory can be read and it is understood that he looks to the future with confidence. These two paintings, which successfully describe the difficulties of the War of Independence and the importance of the victory, can be seen in Ankara State Painting and Sculpture Museum and the National Library.
